Disciplinary Strategies

Image
photo not mine Do you agree to include spanking, hitting or slapping as a punishment for child misbehavior?  Take the classes you need to learn effective parenting and appropriate disciplining As parents we naturally inculcate discipline to help our young ones learn proper behavior and make good choices. Its primary importance is to teach them self-regulation to prepare them in facing the outside world. In my opinion, physical punishment infuses fear and disobedience rather than understanding. In the old times, corporal penalty had been the primary form of disciplining kids, thus results to aggression, spanking leads a kid to be defiant and becomes more stubborn. When I became a mom, I was able to manage and change the way on how I will discipline and raise my kids.  I do not want them to have whip marks on their skin as a form of castigation. It is best to formulate house rules to set limits and boundaries as I already mentioned in one of my previous post. We

photo from the web When is the first time you heard your kid saying “Mommy look I can do it!” Mixed feelings of excitement and happiness engulf us seeing our young ones can slowly be independent. Here are some ways on how to teach kids independence Allow them to play on their own and teach them how to tidy up their toys afterwards. Make sure that the toys we give them are suited for their age, so they can play alone at times. Simply coach them how to put on their own shoes, or tie the lace unaided. Allow them to pick their choice of clothes to wear and let them dress themselves. Teach them simple house chores like making up their own bed, dusting, setting up the table and washing the dishes Allow them to commit minor mistakes, they will learn from it, let them

10 Tips for Setting Up a Study Area for Your Child

Providing your child with an adequate place to study can help him complete his school work in an efficient manner. When your child has everything he needs to get his work done, he will feel more organized and be able to finish it in less time, giving your child more time to have fun. 1. Get Everything Together Assemble all of the tools your child needs to complete his homework assignments. In most cases, you will need paper, pencils, a ruler, scissors and a pack of crayons. If your child runs into other items he needs, keep those in the same place for the future. 2. Choose A Well Lit Spot A place close to a window is best, but directly under a light can work as well. Being able to see clearly is important for completing homework assignments. This also reduces the strain on his eyes, which can help prevent damage to his eyes. 3. See What Your Kid Thinks You want your child to be comfortable while he does his homework. Therefore, his input on the matter is important. Let him pi

Ways to review during exams

Third Quarter examinations is usually held before the Christmas break in my youngest kid’s school.  This year, it was scheduled on December 14, 15 and 16. December 17 will be their Christmas party. In this way, pupils and students will get to enjoy the Christmas break. Are you also hands-on in tutoring your kids? Daily school homeworks and weekly quizzes may come easy with our kids but what about quarterly tests? Reviews during quarterly examinations really need time and effort because the lesson scopes usually are long and that they will be reviewing for 10 subjects in the elementary level.  Math, Computer, Science, Civics (Sibika), EPP/HELE (Home Economics and Livelihood Education), MAPE (Music, Arts and PE), Reading, Language, Filipino and CLE/GMRC (Christian Living and Good manners and Right Conduct) I did not have a hard time with quarterly reviews with my eldest son during his school days, but with my youngest son, well he always has plenty of alibis in order to skip his review

Kids at play

The amazing changes in kids take place from birth to 1 year old.   At this stage, a child is all about observing his environment and picking up the skills needed to become a full-fledged toddler. The best toys right now need to stimulate their sight, sound and touch.   Toys that have bold contrasting colors, toys that make squeaky or crinkling noises and are soft or textured are best for engaging these senses.   Multi-patterned colorful crib mobiles with sounds, wrist, foot and hand rattles are some of the toys recommended for babies 3 months old and older. crib mobile hand rattle rattle When the kid reaches 9 months you can already give him soft blocks, stacking rings or nesting cups. soft blocks stacking rings From age 1 up to age 2 up, floor gyms, music cubes, activity blocks, activity boards or activity tables, simple sturdy musical instruments, colorful balls are toys which may capture their interest. activity gym activity table activity wal

Comfortable Nightwear

Image
Keeping the family clothes closet neat and clean is one of the things I manage to monitor in my home management.  I often tell my househelp to sort the wearing apparels properly before keeping them in the closets after each laundry schedule.  Classify them according to its usage. Fold and combine clothes of the same colors, separate the house clothes, pyjamas and nightwear from the school uniforms, office clothes, jackets and outdoor garments. I taught my children of wearing the proper attire fitted for every occasion, thus they are accustomed to changing their clothes into house clothing upon coming home from school, office or from an outdoor activity. They also have the habit of wearing their pajamas at night for a much comfortable slumber.  I bought my husband and kids three sets of sleeping apparels each, while I only have two sets which lately I noticed needs replacement.  Due to my busy schedules, I opted to buy them online as Deals Direct is one of my favorite browsing sit

Learn how to say No!

I keep on telling my children that is not hard to say No. Do not ever think that you are being rude and bad when you reject.  Do not get worried of hurting other person’s feelings because you think you are being inconsiderate. A straight forward answer in a friendly tone or manner will refrain them from getting offended. Well, in my point of view, we just cannot always say yes and accept all invitations offered or tasks given to us for we do not have to please people all the time.   We also have to think of our calendar, time and priorities. We all have busy schedules and plans on a daily basis.  If you are free and it will not conflict your time plan, or you can do it on time then go ahead say Yes. Never be afraid to deny a favor asked of you, if you think you cannot do it. Immediately decline an invitation if you are uncomfortable or just not in the mood to attend. Set aside the fear of losing your friends and opportunities.  If you are being invited do not forget to say thank yo

How to tend to Cuts and Abrasions

Image
Little feet of our kids are tirelessly traipsing to discover their world.  As they clamber around, most certainly they come up with a few cuts and abrasion.  We need to care for these scrapes and scabs to avoid infection. photo taken from the web  For minor cuts and abrasions with little to no bleeding; Wash down the wound under running water to irrigate out dirt and debris. Thoroughly wash the wound with mild soap or better to use an anti-bacterial soap then rinse thoroughly. Apply antiseptic like Povidone Iodine (Betadine) and cover the wound with sterile gauze or bandage to prevent them from poking it. Examine the wound daily, keeping an eye out for redness, swelling or pus which is an indication of infection. Change the dressing as needed.  Leave the bandages off once a scab forms For large cuts and abrasions, with continuous bleeding Wash down the wound under running water to irrigate out as much dirt and debris as you can  Have your child sit or lie and raise t

Importance of Deworming in Children

When I was still a kid, I am very afraid of being dewormed.   I pretend to be asleep or I will get out of the house and play in order to skip or delay the activity. I was too skinny then but I ate heavy, my mom suspected that my stomach was infested with parasites.   My playmates scared me by telling stories of worms getting out anywhere from the body, that is why I really cried out loud during deworming periods, lol.    Only when I became a mother have I known of its importance.   Deworming is deem necessary and never should it be taken lightly.   Eliminating worms help to prevent the illnesses they cause in children.   These hookworm, pinworm, roundworm, tapeworm and whipworm are internal human parasites that affect the general health of our children. Some are too small to be seen by the naked eyes. It is better to consult a physician if it is your first time to deworm your kid.   He can best evaluate and provide you the correct details on proper dosage and the significan

Why Do Babies Cry?

Our babies cry naturally. It is their way of communicating with us since they cannot talk yet.   There are a lot of reasons behind it and we need to interpret and supposed to know why a baby cries.   If your baby is wailing and you cannot figure out why? Here are some lists that you may find helpful to comfort and soothe your child. They may be irritable due to wet diaper or clothes. Especially on cold weather, they may be feeling cold or annoyed with their wet diaper or soiled clothes. Maybe hungry or thirsty. Babies usually need to be fed every four to five hours, depending on their age. They also need to drink   water aside from the infant formula. Bitten by a mosquito, ants or other insects. Check all over their body to see if they have been bitten by mosquitos, ants or other insects that feels itchiness and redness on their skin. Good Study Habits

Yahmir my youngest son has been complaining about his teachers, giving too much home works and projects especially now that he is already on the 6 th grade. Subject lessons are getting much difficult day by day. It is a good thing that he already had established a good study habit.   No matter how many school tasks he has after a school day, he can accomplish them in a matter of time.   Using time and energy wisely will help one excel in his studies and may even let one enjoy other worthwhile activities too. Make and follow a schedule that provides for a systematic way of getting studies done. Unless one has organized his time into a better schedule and develops a good set of work habits, one will continue being frustrated and unsuccessful in studies Budget time by making and following a schedule of what to do within a period of time.   I will be sharing you some tips to make a better and realistic plan of study. Study the same subject at the same time each day. Yah

Teaching Kids Honesty

If you will notice a child begins to make believe and lie when they reach the toddler stage.   The formative years of a child begins in the age of zero-five.   During this age, they become aware and curious of what’s happening around them, they mimic the things they see and hear and because of their virgin minds, they still cannot distinguish what is right and what is wrong. A crucial stage which lay the foundation of the whole life of a child.   It is very important for us to guide and teach them to be more emotionally stable.   A child who feels being loved has the less chance to misbehave. “Haplos ng pagmamahal” (showing affection through touch or simply the touch of love) is just one way how to show and let your child feel that he is well-loved and taken cared of.   The best foundation for discipline is love. One of the first things we should teach them is how to be honest.   We can teach honesty anytime through their daily activities, explaining carefully for their little
