Teaching Kids Honesty

If you will notice a child begins to make believe and lie when they reach the toddler stage.  The formative years of a child begins in the age of zero-five.  During this age, they become aware and curious of what’s happening around them, they mimic the things they see and hear and because of their virgin minds, they still cannot distinguish what is right and what is wrong. A crucial stage which lay the foundation of the whole life of a child.  It is very important for us to guide and teach them to be more emotionally stable.  A child who feels being loved has the less chance to misbehave. “Haplos ng pagmamahal” (showing affection through touch or simply the touch of love) is just one way how to show and let your child feel that he is well-loved and taken cared of.  The best foundation for discipline is love.

One of the first things we should teach them is how to be honest.  We can teach honesty anytime through their daily activities, explaining carefully for their little minds to comprehend.  It is vital for our kids to learn the value of honesty, for it refers to the moral character of a person.

Here are some tips on how to educate your children to be honest.
  • Slowly, point out to them that an honest person is somebody who is brave to tell the truth.
  • An honest person is one who admits one’s mistake and asks for forgiveness if you have done something wrong. Learn to say I am sorry.
  • Make it a point to keep promises.
  • Do not be afraid to always tell the truth even if you know you’ll be scolded, don’t get angry, when parents scold you for doing something wrong.
  • Have the courage to do and say things which are correct and true.
  • Inspire and tell them stories related to honesty.
  • Inculcate in their minds that being honest is a good deed.
  • To be honest is to apologize and be ready to bear the consequences
  • Emphasize that lying, cheating and theft are sins. God bless honest children.
  • Truth brings trust, peace and freedom from fear.

One of the ways to measure a person’s credibility is through being honest. It is a a virtue attributed to integrity, truthfulness and straightforwardness.  It is our obligation to rear and mold our children to become good people.

Informational Toys for Kids

Children loves to play and it is beneficial to them if they will play on educational toys at an early age for they will learn as they play. We as parents need to know that functional and constructive playing takes a vital part in developing a healthy mind and body.  Informational toys will enhance a natural child’s curiosity, creativeness, and cognitive and logical thinking that will lead him to explore possibilities and learn to test each one.

In these simple playing activities, the child is learning basic problem solving skills while discovering and exploring the colors, numbers, letters, sizes and shapes.  Repetition of playing with these educational toys, the child gains confidence in his abilities which will encourage him to do new things.

Aside that playing is fun, it will also keep him busy while you can finish some of your house chores as well.

Here are suggestions of less- expensive educational toys that you may buy.

Toddler kids
  • Color, number and letter blocks
  • Construction blocks
  • Toy kitchen set
  • Puzzles form boards
  • Stackable blocks

 Preschool Kids
  • Activity boards or tables
  • Nursery Rhyme books with pop-ups
  • Shape and number sorter
  • Coloring Books
  • Edible Clay
  • Puzzles
  • Board games

I usually bring my kids to a bookstore during their preschool years to encourage and get them interested in reading.

More suggestions? Please feel free to write it in the comment form.

Child-Proof Your Home

If you’re having a baby or a toddler, it is best recommended to child-proof your homes to keep them always safe and away from unwanted accidents.

The smallest person in the house can occupy the most space and can create the most chaotic mess, lol.  So in order for us and our child’s toys live happily ever after, we have to think of an organized clean up strategy.

These tips will help make your clean-ups easier and faster

  • Position the crib away from the window.
  • Pull electrical cords away from the crib
  • Install window guards, window grills are very important, especially if the bedroom is at the second floor of your house.
  • Place edge or corner guards/bumpers for tables or chairs. Before, I used the easy stick on rubberized end or corner guards.
  • Re-position your make-up kit, perfumes etc. on a higher shelf of your dresser
  • Use a large bin or plastic container for his frequently played toys
  •  Use floor rubber mats to areas where your kid play most of the time

Bathroom/Comfort Room
  • Install safety locks on low cabinet doors
  • Keep toxic products (like cleansers or decloggers) on a high shelf or in a cabinet locked.
  • Medicine cabinets should also be installed with a lock
  • Keep bathroom  floors dry to prevent the incident of slipping

  • Buy or do it yourself protective appliance knob covers, especially for stoves.
  • Attach a safety lock on any drawer that contains knives, scissors or any sharp utensils
  • Place anti-slip rubber mats near sinks.
  •  Unplug Microwave Ovens, Automatic Thermos, and other Kitchen appliances when not in use

Living Room
  • Cover unused electrical outlets
  • Place corner and edge bumpers on tables and low shelves
  • Use doorstops
  • Secure the appliance cords

Grooming Keys for Men Skin Care

Men also suffer from different skin problems. I learned the proper way to embellish and improve men skin through experience.  My three boys (my husband and two sons) frequently complain of different skin issues.

Oily skin is the common problem among my two children. It gives their faces a greasy shine.  Yahmir once said that it look gross, lol. Oily skin is prone to blackheads and pimple breakouts.  Being worried of acquiring acne to cover their faces, I brought them to my dermatologist for proper evaluation and check up. My skin doctor taught them procedures and tips on the proper men skin care. They were advised to avoid harsh soaps and cleansers. We have learned that too much face-washing can cause redness and tenderness, which in turn makes your skin produce more oil.  Also there is a need to exfoliate regularly because dead cells can accumulate and clog pores, then follow with a light moisturizer to hydrate.

My husband is dealing with dark under-eye circles caused by lack of sleep, as well as aging. He was advised to get at least eight hours of sleep a night, and keep the under-eye area moisturized with antioxidant-rich products. He is also complaining of shaving problems.  His skin nick easily, gets red and bumpy after he shaves. The skin doctor informed us that beard shaving goes more smoothly when using a glycerin or gel. It will not only calm the skin, but it will let your razor to glide across your face. Finish shaving with a soothing aftershave lotion or your daily moisturizer.  Do not use alcohol- based aftershaves for it will  irritate your skin.

Now, it is not only me who is seeing a dermatologist, but the whole family as well. Who says Men are not vain? lol

Note: I am participating in a blogger campaign by Bucks2Blog and was compensated. However, the post was written based on my own personal experience.

Parenting Teenagers

My eldest son JM, is already 21 years old.  Gladly, I was able to surpass the teenage parenting with him with not so much problems encountered.  I might not be able to use and follow the same teenage parenting technique with my youngest son Yahmir, who is 11 years old because he is much more stubborn than his elder brother

It is a fact that in this era almost everything has changed.  We need to face these realities and find ways on how we can adapt to it.

Dating is now called “hooking up”, whether it’s by facebook, plurk, skype, yahoo messenger and the most common “texting”, that’s how mostly the teenagers will meet and chat-up members of the opposite sex.  They are spending a lot of time in these media.

Well, fortunately we can also use these technologies to keep tab on our teens.  We ought to put the computer in a place that can be easily accessed by the family like the living room.  In this way, we can casually monitor their communications and put a limit in accessing social networking. Parents know more than anyone how important Websafety truly is for our children. We therefore, can easily implement a house rule of no surfing, cellphone or landlines calls beyond a reasonable hour like 10 pm or so.

It is difficult to keep track of our teen’s friends especially since he probably bloats his facebook page with every friend invite.  I, myself could no longer identify my facebook friends ahaha.

We opt to stay in touch with friends who our children actually see in real life.  I make sure I have the cellphone numbers of some of their close friends and I also let them get invited in certain family occasions to know them personally.

Mind you, girls chase boys too, as I’ve experienced with JM. Traditional dating roles have been reversed many times over with a lot more conviction.  Some girls make the moves, get aggressive and send flirty notes.

We should speak in a friendly tone when we need to do a one-on-one conference with our teenager.  Listen well, ask with clarity and do not blame.

Talk about dating, and what comes next.  I talk straight about sex and exchange ideas, so I will know their point of view about it.

Most of the time, it is tough to get their attention.  There is scientific evidence that all the raging hormones in a teen make it challenging for them to stay still and listen.  So, when it is my turn to talk, as much as possible I make it brief and straight to the point.

I made it clear also that we (my husband and I) had decided the age on when can they date with the opposite sex.   At what age, can they go for an official date with defined parameters in transportation, activities and curfew.  I always point out and instill in their minds that they need to finish their studies first and establish their own careers before getting into a serious relationship.

Teenagers usually use their feelings and emotions, thus making it hard for them to realize and know the difference between crush and love. We need to teach them how to use mind over matter.  They need our guidance, so as I was always saying in my previous posts, always keep the channels of communication between you and your children open.

I would like to emphasize that the ways and tips I mentioned above are based on my personal experience and sharing it to you only to serve as a guide.  Our children possess different personalities, so as different strategies may apply.

The Magic Words

Kids always learn their firsts in our homes.  They learn to say their first word and being hands-on mothers, we were the first ones to hear it from them. They learn how to walk, learn how to write and draw through our effort and guidance.  These first experiences and achievements of our children gave us a bundle of joy. This is a moment of lifetime happiness for us. To see how they grow and how they achieve their little ways of joyous success in their endeavors.

We also instill into their young minds the proper values and good manners.  We do not stop teaching and honing them to become good people. We teach them the right conduct and implement discipline to prepare them in facing the society and the reality of the outside world.

There are three magic words that will help them make a better person as they grow old.

1.      The use of “po and opo” ( A kind of respect use among elders in the Filipino culture)
2.      “Thank you”.  Teaching kids how to express gratitude upon receipt of every favor they ask, when accepting something such as a gift or a price won in a contest, or upon receiving words of  nice compliments or praises.
3.      “I am sorry” Our kids must learn how to accept their own faults or mistakes and learn how to apologize for every wrong deed they have done.  We are responsible of explaining to them the importance of admission of mistakes, learning how to acknowledge it and  the willingness to be stand corrected

In my opinion, aside from the spiritual education, these three magic words are the best elements that will complete a person’s good personality trait and behavior.

Cleaning 101: The Bathroom

How often do you clean your Bathroom/Comfort room?  Based on hygienic purposes, it is best recommended to clean it daily.  It is the part of the house where bacteria and germs accumulates fast.

I personally clean our bathroom on a daily basis, cleaning it before I take a bath. It may seem so tiring to do it everyday but I was used to it.  I want my bathroom and kitchen to be the cleanest part of the house and this is how I clean it:

  • Remove the shower curtain first, wash, then hang to dry. I get tired of cleaning it everyday so I removed it and just put it on again if we have visitors to come over (lol).
  • Open windows and the door, then slip on rubber gloves before you grab your favorite tile spray cleaner or in my case I use a mixture of detergent soap and Domex cleaning agent (bleach can be an alternative) in a small pail.
  • Other cleaning materials I use are:  big scrubber sponge, cleaning brush, toilet brush, a microfiber cloth and floor mop.

  • I start with the hard to reach tiles, using a mop dipped in the soap and cleaning agent mixture.
  • Next is the tile scrubbing. Exert more scrubbing on the corners of the tiles, better to use the cleaning brush for corners, then flush/rinse it out with water.
  • Then, clean the lavatory using scrubber sponge with the cleaning mixture.
  • The toilet bowl, flush first then squirt a deep toilet cleaner in the bowl and under the rim.  Let it sit for a few minutes.  Then brush the bowl and rim using a toilet brush. Adding more cleanser if needed.
  • Brush the toilet floor, rinse thoroughly with water then dry it using a mop or a microfiber cloth.
  • Lastly, wipe toilet mirrors, mini cabinet where it holds the family toothbrush, shaver, mouthwash etc.  Do not forget to wash the toothbrushes too then pour hot water on the bristles.

Water stains on the tiles can be removed by spraying a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and water.  Anyway it will not build up if you regularly clean the tiles.

Drains, even not completely clogged should be cleared of hair once a month.  If you do not have a pipe de-clogger, untwist a wire hanger and slide one end inside the drain to poke down or pull up any clumps of hair, then pour muriatic acid into the drain to dissolve soap coating the pipes.

ELD Posture Correction Cushion and Travel Bags

The proper sitting posture helps to enhance concentration, especially to students, office workers and bloggers like me who hardly leaves the chair for long hours.

A correct sitting posture is to sit with your back straight and your hips touching the back of the chair.  Keep your neck inline with the upper back.

At the end of the day, my husband and I always complain of lower back pain due to long hours of sitting.  My husband’s lower back pain is due to long distance driving while in my case, I am seated almost all day in front of my laptop to work on my articles for my blogs.  I have been buying the sitting and back rest cushions for years now but they are not helping in any way.  They easily wore out and not comfortable to use. I became interested again in buying a new sitting and back rest cushions upon seeing this Memory Foam Cushions of  Eld Posture Correction Cushions.

I am aware that poor posture may become a major cause of disk and spine diseases, so I am glad that Eld Posture Correction Cushions came up with these products that will help us in recovering our good health once again.  Eld Posture correction cushion is one technology that will aid in keeping an individual physically healthy.

These cushions are made to last for a long time.  It has an outstanding restoring force and cushion, as it is made of high elasticity polyurethane memory foam.  It also has an excellent air-permeation of Air-mesh fabric.
