How to Light Your Living Room

Many times, the lighting in one's home is taken for granted in favor of other decorative elements which seem to have the biggest contribution when it comes to achieving aesthetic satisfaction. It is a more common scenario to see homeowners fuss over new sofas, antique jars and rugs, than over avant-garde lighting fixtures and fancy chandeliers. This is owed perhaps to the limited notion that many people have about the effects of good lighting -- especially in the living room.

Why good lighting counts

But really, how can lighting be so important? Lighting, as a matter of fact, has a good deal of impact on the sense of wellness of people. Imagine yourself in a dim or dark room in contrast to a well-lit one. Of course you would be able to achieve more with the latter. And according to studies, people who work in well-lit spaces are more organized and are more driven to accomplish tasks because they are less fatigued compared to those who work in dark areas. Too much brightness and glare, on the other hand, can also prove to be counter-productive.

Setting the lighting conditions in your living room

The living room is one of the key areas in any home. It is where visitors are met, and is also the place in which family members can engage in recreational and relaxation activities whether individually or together. As such, it is very important that you set the lighting in this room according to the purpose you want it to serve.

If you intend for the living room to be a place of relaxation, then soft lights with dimmers are highly recommended. Meanwhile, if you are more concerned about function, the best lighting to install would be overhead lights which provide sufficient lighting that is needed in precision activities.

Combining style and function

While function is important, one of the goals in having good lighting is to enhance the aesthetic quality of a room. And this is attained not only by the lighting itself, but also by the design of the lighting fixture. Artemide lights are an example of quality lighting that comes in unique contemporary style that will surely add that extra oomph to your living room. Different types of lighting that you can use in the living room

Lights don't always come in the form of ceiling attachments. Here are some types of lighting commonly used in living rooms:

Chain pendants

These are usually referred to as chandeliers. Like conventional lighting, they are attached to the ceiling but are built with chains that allow for the bulbs to be suspended in the air.

Wall sconces

This is the type of lighting that is installed in walls for a more dramatic and soft effect. They are usually placed in hallways and in places that are intended for relaxation like the living room. Wall sconces usually have dimmers that allow regulation of light diffusion.

Floor lamps

These are similar to table lamps, only bigger and are placed to stand on the floor. They are usually placed where light is necessary for productivity in a particular area, while keeping the rest in dim or limited lighting.

  2. While I love the romantic glow of yellow light, I find it impractical in our tropical climate when you don't want the air-cond swtiched on. Yellow light tends to make a room hotter than white light. Besides, yellow light tends to make me depressed! To solve the problem, we have two sets of lights in our living room - yellow for aesthetics when we have guests and white for every day use!
