Food Alert! Spoiled Food Causes Food Poisoning

Aside from being a potential heatstroke victim, food poisoning is rampant too when the weather is hot. Certain foods easily spoil in hot weather if not kept properly.

Food poisoning comes from eating foods that contain salmonella, bacteria or toxins, which are poisonous substances. You may have had mild food poisoning with diarrhea and an upset stomach.  If the stomach ache persists followed with vomiting and frequent runs to the comfort room, it is advisable to seek medical help.

Proper cooking and food handling must be taken into consideration too.  The use of a serving spoon should always be practiced during meals.  Make sure to check on the left-over status first before you eat it.

How to know if the food is already spoiled?
  • Milk is spoiled when it starts to look like yogurt.
  • Eggs, when something starts pecking its way out of the shell, the egg is probably past its prime or shake it, if you felt something is shaking inside, it is already spoiled.
  • Canned goods, check on its expiration date.
  • Bread, there are splotches of green or black molds.
  • Flour is spoiled when it wiggles
  • Left-overs - if it smelled weird or off odor, it has bubbles on top.

Examples of viands that easily spoil are dishes cooked in coconut milk, dishes with tomatoes, like pancit palabok and other pasta dishes.

Buying food in nearby Carinderia (cooked-food store) is not a good option. I discourage my children buying viands from a nearby carinderia when I am sick and I cannot cook.  They will just open a canned good like tuna or corned beef instead for their meal.

Left-over food should not linger long on the the table. Put it in tightly closed containers and keep it in the refrigerator to prevent it from being spoiled.

Let us always keep our family safe!

  2. Til how long can you store frozen meat po? I don't have any idea. Our helper has this habit of placing leftovers inside the oven. Naka-off naman pero ginagawa kasi nya storage.

correct! in our house, we try to consume most of the leftovers, inside the fridge/freezer within 2-3 days.

with bread, we just keep it in the freezer and just heat it up when we like to eat some.

most of our pasta sauce (especially the ones that are tomato based) are always kept frozen, until ready to be consumed.

for other cooked meals, if there are vegetables in it, we try to separate the veggies from the soup/sauce. We were told that cooked vegetables will also spoil much faster. and if the dish is hot, let it cool down and avoid too moisture from the lid??

  6. Thank you very much for the info.  It's very timely because my pregnant sister fell prey to food poisoning just recently.  She's okay now.  I will make sure to pass this on to her.

  7. Yes, we should be careful with spoiled food especially for my 2-month old baby, sabi pag mag 4 hours na yung milk sa bottle niya - it's spoiled. Kahit doubtful, I throw it out, ayokong masira tyan ni baby.

  11. frozen meat in my experience should only be kept for two weeks time only.

natawa naman ako, noong maliit pa ako, i remember ganyan din ginagawa ng mommy ko, sa loob ng oven nilalagay ang leftover namin, and the primary reason is para wag langawin or ipisin, which on the contrary is a wrong practice hehe
