It is wise to opt for energy efficient cooling systems that gives low electricity consumption. ACs that are 10 years or older are most likely not at their optimum efficiency.  Moreover, choosing the right airconditioning unit that suits your room is very important.

When turning on your cooling unit, put it on fan first for 3 to 5 minutes before adjusting and setting the thermostat.

Turn it off one hour before leaving the room or set the timer for automatic shut off.

In case of power outage, make sure the switch is off and allow time to pass before turning it on again when the power returns.

Avoid placing heat-generating appliances such as TV sets or lamps near the aircon unit. The heat coming from these appliances can significantly affect how much energy the aircon consumes.
Keep your unit clean.  Clean the filter by washing it in soap and water at least every two weeks to ensure clean air free of allergens that can cause health problems. Wipe the exterior on a regular basis to keep dust from accumulating.
