Cleaning 101: How to get rid of Mildews

Are you also annoyed and troublesome seeing mildews on your clothes, leather bags and belts, shoes, and clothes?  This fungus can stain paper, cloth, leather and could even bring more harm to our health.

Mildews accumulate due to dust and moisture from high humidity.  They grew more in darkness and damp places with stagnant air inside the house.

In the first five years of my housekeeping and homemaking, I always encounter this problem yet I do not know really how to get rid of them. They keep on coming back after a few weeks. Just as always my mom is ever ready to help and rescue

As experienced, molds grow rapidly during wet weather, as much as possible we must try to control the dampness inside our homes.  Here are tips on how I get rid of them
  • Dust regularly.
  • Air circulation and movement is very important to removing moisture. I had exhaust fans installed which I think helped a lot.
  • I have learned that cool air holds less moisture than warm air, so I agreed in installing air conditioning systems in our bedrooms. The cool air removes the moisture by taking up warm air, thus cool dry air is circulating back into the room.
  • I also use a dehumidifier/air ionizer in our bedroom, as I’ve already discussed in my previous post

  • Closets must be well dried, poorly ventilated closets get damp and musty especially on rainy weather. Open closed doors and drawers occasionally to allow clean air in.
  • The heat from a 60-100 watt bulb lampshade can be helpful to dry the closet fully during closet clean-ups, I use it instead of an electric fan.  But before I heat the closet, I spray disinfectant solution first.

  • It is very important to clean up and remove any sign of mildew at once to prevent it from spreading to other items or you might regret, because it could damage the item beyond repair.
  • I put silica gel and damp trap in my closets and drawers, it absorbs moisture. Silica gels are the small pouch that you will see inside the box of your newly purchased shoes or bags.

Now, how do I remove mildews?
  • With leather belts and bags, I just wipe it with a microfiber cloth wrung out in a solution of one part rubbing alcohol to one cup of water then dry it thoroughly.
  • Clothes, I use laundry detergents and chlorine bleach.  You can buy chlorine bleach for colored clothes in the supermarkets.
  • Shoes, I do the cleaning outside the house, rubber shoes are washed then hanged (not on direct sunlight), while I vacuum the leather shoes then the same procedure is done as with leather belts and bags before putting on an instant wax shine.
  • Leather car upholstery and inside car, wash the car mats, then vacuum the inside of the car.  Next is to wipe the upholsteries and dashboard with the solution, dry it thoroughly, leave the doors open for a while  to assure that it’s completely dried.

Sabayang Bigkas at Linggo ng Wika Celebration

Every school in the entire Philippine Archipelago annually observes the Linggo ng Wika in the month of August. Different programs are performed and celebrated by the pupils, students and teachers to commemorate the importance of having our national language and to pay respect for Manuel L. Quezon, Father of the Filipino National Language.

The Filipino Club of my youngest son's school conducted a “Sabayang Bigkas Competition”, and Yahmir was one of the participants among the Grade VI pupils in their entry for the intermediate level.  All the performers wore the Traditional Filipino Costume for their presentation.

The program was simple yet very much organized.  Some parents were there to see their children perform.

The program was divided into two parts. First, the intermediate elementary level and then the high school level. I was not able to watch the program for the high school students for my husband and I need to attend to a client appointment set also on that day.  We immediately left after Yahmir's performance, he was very happy to see us. Saturday next week, we will see to it that we will finish watching their Intramurals. .

Cleaning 101: The Bedroom

The most private part of the house is the bedroom.  It is also the quietest room where one can enjoy serenity and calm atmosphere. Just like any part of my house, I like it also clean and tidy.  I call it my chamber .

I usually do a general cleaning on a weekly basis, cleaning the electric fans, cleaning the air-conditioning unit’s filter and changing of bed sheets or bed covers, pillow cases and comforters.  It is best recommended to change bed sheets, comforters and pillow cases every 7 days, however during rainy season; I sometimes do it every two weeks. There is a very real psychology to gaining organizational skills that one gets as they earn their life experience degree.

Here is the procedure on how I do general cleaning on our bedrooms:
  • Before I take out the bed covers, I remove first the cobwebs on the ceilings using a long broomstick.  Usually it will take a month or more before I could see webs again.
  • Take out the bed sheets and pillow cases. After taking out the bed covers, I vacuum the whole mattress tossing around to eliminate the bed mites or commonly known as dust mites. This invisible insect cause allergies and sucks our blood while we are sleeping.  After vacuuming I spray a cleaning solution.  Our Allergologist taught me how to create a cleaning solution (one part water to five parts white vinegar into a spray bottle). I spray it thoroughly and just allow the mattress to air dry. I spray on the pillows too. But before I spray the solution I sweep the floor first and then I open the bedroom doors to allow natural air to come in.  Don’t worry as the solution dries, your bed will not smell of vinegar.  The solution will kill thousands of dust mites as tested and proven.
  • While waiting for the mattresses to dry, I wipe the walls with water containing a little disinfectant solution.  I use Lysol or Domex.
  • After the walls, I dust the bedroom furnitures and cabinets using a damp microfiber cloth. I do not hang curtains inside the bedroom to prevent the allergens to accumulate into it.
  • Electric fans and the air-conditioning filter come next.  Air-conditioning filters should be washed with soap and water then dry it, wiping away the dirt on the air condition unit before I put it back.  I also make sure that our air-conditioning unit  is well maintained by having it serviced and cleaned twice a year.
  • After dusting the furnitures and cabinets I mop the floor twice, in order for me not to get a broken bone, I do not toss the bed frame, I just use the mop to reach the farthest part under it.
  • Because my family is asthmatic, we use hypoallergenic washable pillows and bed linen that I put on the mattress before the bed cover.

Lastly, I put on fresh and crisp bedcovers and pillow cases. Comforters are very heavy when wet, so as the linens and bedcovers, so I just avail the laundry service for it.

Job done!   What about a glass of ice cold tea or water to refresh.

Nose Bleed

I panicked the first time I experience nose bleeding with my kids.  Thankfully, the doctor assured me that nose bleeds are rarely cause for alarm and common in kids between the ages of 3 to 10 if they do not have any underlying diseases or other health problems that might cause the nose to bleed. Nosebleeds often stop on their own and can be readily attended to safely at home.

Yesterday, while my twelve year old son, Yahmir was reviewing for his quarterly exams, he alarmingly told me that his nose is bleeding. I was busy preparing for his snack at that time, I immediately pinched the soft part of his nose firmly and instructed him to lean forward slightly with his head tilted forward. I repeated the procedure until the bleeding stopped.

His allergic rhinitis has been the culprit of his bleeding nose, he kept on sneezing and blows hard because he is annoyed of the mucus coming in and out of his nose. After I cleaned his nose, I told him to rest for a while and told him not to blow too hard and as much as possible avoid rubbing his nose forcefully because tiny blood vessels inside our nose get irritated and can get break open and bleed.

Aside from allergy other common causes of nose bleeding are self-induced by nose picking, rubbing or blowing it too hard or having their nose knocked while playing. It is very important to trim fingernails regularly.

Another thing before I forget, do not let your kid to get to blow their nose when they are experiencing a nose bleed. If the bleeding persist after applying the home remedy, get medical help immediately.

Why Do Babies Cry?

Our babies cry naturally. It is their way of communicating with us since they cannot talk yet.  There are a lot of reasons behind it and we need to interpret and supposed to know why a baby cries.  If your baby is wailing and you cannot figure out why? Here are some lists that you may find helpful to comfort and soothe your child.

    1. They may be irritable due to wet diaper or clothes. Especially on cold weather, they may be feeling cold or annoyed with their wet diaper or soiled clothes.
    2. Maybe hungry or thirsty. Babies usually need to be fed every four to five hours, depending on their age. They also need to drink  water aside from the infant formula.
    3. Bitten by a mosquito, ants or other insects. Check all over their body to see if they have been bitten by mosquitos, ants or other insects that feels itchiness and redness on their skin.
    4. Feverish.  Make a habit of getting a baby’s temperature first before giving him/her a bath.  If a baby is suffering from a fever, give him the prescribed paracetamol drops and if it still persist, better to let him see a doctor as soon as possible.
    5. Pierced by a pointed object.  Our children who might be playing near or beside their younger sibling’s bed or crib may have forgotten to take away a toy.  If you are still using a safety pin for a cloth diaper, double check if it is properly pinned.
    6. Pain during teething period.  The teething stage can be stressful to our child.  Help him to ease the pain through giving him a teether.
    7. Too much or too little food or water. This will cause stomach ache and uneasiness.  We have to be aware that every month or two, feeding increases by the ounces. We can always ask for pediatric advice on proper feeding.
    8. Need for more love and attention.  Babies need to be cuddled more often.  They like to see our faces, hear our voices and heartbeats as we hold them in our arms.  They can feel the love through the warmth of our embrace.  Touching is a way to let them feel our love, affection and attention.
    9. Sleepy.  Babies are very sensitive to noise, they cannot sleep well in noisy surroundings.  Once they are bothered from their sleep, they will cry, tapping him lightly while humming a lullaby will put him back to sleep.
    10.  Suffering from colic. Tummy troubles caused by colic or gas pains leads to a lot of crying.  This is usually the most common reason of our baby’s excessive crying.  If he is suffering from colic, hold him in a position as he was standing on your chest, then tap slightly his back until he burps. Pediatricians may prescribed medicine to get rid of colic but I prefer the natural way.
    11. Afraid or shock.  Babies also feels fear.  When they suddenly have  been awaken due to a loud noise, they will definitely cry. Comfort by tapping him slightly or holding him in your arms.
An old Filipino traditional belief says that it is healthy to let a baby cry in the morning to exercise his lungs. Excessive crying may occur at certain times of the day, in my experience with my two sons crying is linked to their daily routine lol.

Pointers to Remember in Long Distance Moving

We rent a house as we still do not have our own.  Moving from one house to another is not only stressful but it makes me sick too.  I learned from my own experience the proper and organized way on how to move from one house to another.

Here are some pointers and tips on a smooth move.
  • Plan ahead when you need to move from one place to another especially if it is a long distance moving. Consider the proximity of the place from your children's school, place of work, market, hospital and many more.
  • Pack your things 2 weeks before you move, make sure also that it is properly labeled outside the box.  Sort it according to frequent usage. Things not used on a daily basis can be packed much earlier than scheduled.
  • Make a thorough check up on the house that you were about to move in, the comfort room, drainage, faucets, and electrical outlets/lightings.  It is better to do the necessary repairs needed before you move in.
  • Schedule a day for clean-up in the new house, bathrooms/comfort rooms and the kitchen should be cleaned before the scheduled move.
  • Contact a long distance moving company, 2 weeks ahead too. Availing their service will give you less pain in the neck for they are well- equipped and you will be assured of the proper handling of your treasured appliances. Just as long as you have the inventory tallied with their list, there’s nothing to get worried about. Formerly, we just use our own vehicle and we find it very tiring going to and fro, it does not only waste too much time but some of my appliances get broken too.
  • Let each of the family member pack their own personal things, so they can easily get and find what they need. Assign a bag or box for their things and remind them to have it labeled too.
  • Cook enough food for the family before moving out.

Note: I am participating in a blogger campaign by Bucks2Blog and was compensated. However, the post was written based on my own personal experience.

Sibling Personalities No Two People are Alike

Parenting is not an easy task, we just cannot rely on what we know and experienced.  There are times that we also need to ask other opinions and do some researches too.  Do not set aside the fact that we also can learn something from our children.

In case you have two or more children, you will observe and discover that they possess different personalities as they grow older.  In my case of having two sons, my disciplinary actions for my elder child do not apply with my youngest child.  Both of them are stubborn but as my youngest son is having ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), he needs a different and special approach in terms of disciplining.

Our kids born under the combination of two genes (parents) may have common traits and physical appearance but we can also notice their differences in some ways.  They may look very much like you, but they are not exactly like you.

We cannot ignore the fact that we sometimes compare our children’s personalities especially when we reprimand them.  Doing so as I’ve learned through my motherhood experience is not fair.  Every individual is unique in some way, character, emotions, attitude and behavioral response patterns differ from one sibling to another.

No two people are alike and the same, even twins have their contrasting ways, habits and attitudes.  I can attest to that because my youngest siblings are twins. They may look alike in some ways but definitely they are very much opposite in other fashion.

Each and every kid has distinctive skills and characteristics, their own personality that we need to guide, enrich and instill basic values such as kindness, honesty and compassion to help them develop into a great person.

Good Study Habits

Yahmir my youngest son has been complaining about his teachers, giving too much home works and projects especially now that he is already on the 6th grade. Subject lessons are getting much difficult day by day.

It is a good thing that he already had established a good study habit.  No matter how many school tasks he has after a school day, he can accomplish them in a matter of time.

Using time and energy wisely will help one excel in his studies and may even let one enjoy other worthwhile activities too. Make and follow a schedule that provides for a systematic way of getting studies done. Unless one has organized his time into a better schedule and develops a good set of work habits, one will continue being frustrated and unsuccessful in studies

Budget time by making and following a schedule of what to do within a period of time.  I will be sharing you some tips to make a better and realistic plan of study.

  • Study the same subject at the same time each day. Yahmir follows his daily class schedule when he study. He goes home from school at 5 pm, so we eat our dinner early to give him ample time to study his lessons and make his assignments.
  • Have a definite place for studying. Have a certain table and chair in a corner where your child can study well.  After some time he will find that he is ready to study when he sits in this place.  A study table is much preferable for it has compartments where your child can put his school things. Studying in bed is definitely a big No.
  • Have all the necessary materials placed in his study table, like ballpens, erasers, dictionaries, other reference books, and art supplies which he might need.  The school bag should be also next to his table when he studies.
  • Turn off the radio or the television, let him study in a quiet setting. Noise even radio music distracts one from studying properly, especially among kids.  Experiments conducted have proved that it is not true that one can study better with a television or a radio on.
  • Telephone calls as much as possible should be limited while he studies.  He should inform his friends and classmates about his study schedule.
  • Eating peanuts and junk foods for me is not advisable while studying.
  • All work and no play makes a person dull, so don’t forget to schedule time for other activities like playing, helping in household chores and recreational activities
  • At school, teach him to form the right kind of classroom habits. Listen very well to his teachers while they lecture. Learn the habit of taking down notes, and jot down all the assignments in the assignment notebook.  It would be easier for him to study, if he knows the flow of their current lessons.
  • Lastly, never do your kid’s home works. Let them do it in the best of their ability. Our task is to tutor them to lessons which they cannot understand, explain but do not give them the answers immediately, let them think hard first. In this way, we can monitor in which subject does he needs help.  More often children in grade school need assistance in Math and English/Language assignments. Check on their works afterwards for correction. Check on their school things like paper, pencil, ballpens, etc.  See to it also that they have enough school supplies to bring for their school needs.

Set a sleeping time schedule during school days.  Having enough sleep will make them more refreshed and ready for school the next day.
