Tiny speck in the eye: First aid

Bringing children to parks and playgrounds is a good form of exercise to let them stretch their muscles and at the same time have fun running and playing.  Playing outdoors holds many surprises for our young explorers.  Unfortunately, there are times that due to strong winds and dust, a foreign matter gets into our little one’s eyes. When this happens do not panic, instead tend to your kid at once so he will not rub his eyes which may cause a serious eye injury.

When going outdoors with your kids, make sure to bring with you their extra clothes, clean towel, water to drink, food and most especially an alcohol or a hand sanitizer.

What to do if a foreign matter gets into your kids eye?
  • Wash your hands thoroughly or put on alcohol on your hands before attempting to examine your child’s eye. Tell your kid not to rub his eyes, it is much better if he cries so the irritant will be washed away by tears.
  • Do not touch or blow into the eye to dislodge the irritant, doing so will risk scratching the surface of the eye, particularly the cornea.
  • Tilt your kid’s head with the affected eye down and gently pull the eyelids apart to open up their eyes as wide as possible.
  • Gently run a steady stream of water from a drinking bottle or a pitcher to flush the irritant off.
  • If flushing fails to dislodge the irritant, bring your kid to the emergency facility nearest you.
  • If any prolonged post irritation occurs, have your child be examined by a doctor for corneal scratching is at risk of infection.

  1. When

alcohol or a hand sanitizer We always have a small bag ready when we go out, either a stroll sa park or mall. Except, we really don't bring any hand sanitizer. Just rubbing alcohol.

  2. Alcohol is really important specially when you're outdoors. The other thing which my mom would always let me do in times like this is to prepare a while bowl filled with water and immerse my opened eyes in it. That way, I don't have to rub my hands in my eyes and prevent irritation. It may not be as handy as listed above when your outdoors but I think a good one when your indoors.

  3. I usually do Step 1, which is to ask my boy to cry.  Thankfully, it works and I don't need to bring him to a doctor.

  7. this happened to me when i was a child. i was looking up at our star apple tree and a speck got into my eye. my yaya (nanny) blew onto my eye to remove it) but  even with it gone, my eye still felt as if the speck is still there.

as an adult, my concern is my eye lash. i frequently get a piece of eyelash in my eye. so what i do now is the water technique. I open my eye in flowing water. works perfectly.

  8. This is a pain, back when I was a kid. I agree, running water is the safest thing to use. But sad to say, we always do the blowing method to get rid of the speck.

  10. Blowing into the eyes, which is usually our first reaction, is not safe coz of saliva might get into the eye and bacteria/virus from the saliva could contaminate it.

  12. my little boy always gets bruised and scratched every time he plays. i don't remember him experiencing this. if he does, i think he has already rubbed his eyes so hard that the irritant has been dislodged. hehehe.
