Oil price hike, Oh no! Not again!

In the recent oil price increase trending to be weekly, it is not surprising that people will think twice in buying a new vehicle. We need to take into consideration of its primal usage, is it really a need or just a luxury?

Oil plays a very important role in running a country’s economy and not only on a family’s budget. Economic recession causes slowdown in economic activity which results to rising unemployment rate, high priced commodities, and bankruptcies.

Using alternative oil sources like bio fuel, made of biological products and bakken oil shale, oil coming from a sedimentary rock unit could help the government in the reduction of oil imports. If we could produce additional oil, it will generally help in the increasing oil demand in the country. Production on our own will mean more people will be employed, more money to improve the nation’s economy.

Having a family vehicle is really very convenient, as we can hold and budget our own time in terms of traveling. We could make several client appointments in a day reassuring that we can come on time. We do not have to worry on passing by EDSA or other traffic prone city streets during peak hours for we can take on alternative routes. It is also very much advantageous during family outings and out of town getaways, for we can bring everything that the family needs and we can make stopovers anytime we want to. On the other hand, owning a family vehicle is just like you’re having another baby in the house. Aside from its high cost maintenance, buying the gas/oil to make it run makes a hole in the pocket.

Lately, as I do the math and assess on our family budget, gasoline purchase allowance took almost the half of our weekly financial allocation. Although it is an integral part in the estimated weekly expenses, the sudden increase is alarming and something has to be done.

We conducted a family meeting on the usage of the two vehicles. We concluded to use only one vehicle, the other one as an alternative for number coding scheme. Commute for short range errands and maximize car pool as much as possible.

I need more suggestions here, please speak your mind, don’t be shy, share your ideas in the comment form below

  2. Sobrang pahirap nga ang mga oil price hikes, and at times I feel thankful that I use public transportation as fares remain the same despite a few price hikes. Although, I do share your sentiments about doing out of town getaways and taking alternative routes.

  3. I don't have a vehicle pa, pero sana by that time lahat sana ng vehicles pede kahit anong klaseng fuel ang ilagay. I have a mio but it didn't for any kind of gas, premium is such a pain in ass

  4. public transpo is still the cheapest way to go. however even that will be a pain in the a$$ if we don't research and try to use other alternatives for petrol

  5. Oil price hikes, a pain for us all, be it car owners or not! If oil prices go UP... car owners will pay higher for gas.. and commuters will suffer FARE INCREASES for public vehicles in long term effect... -Alternatives is a MUST! :(

  6. Ang hirap po talaga pag may vehicle. Actually, hindi lang naman ang may cars ang nahihirapan tuwing may oil price hike.. Lahat-lahat na, as in damay-damay na talaga! Kasi pag mataas na ang gasolina, mataas na rin ang pamasahe kahit sa traysikel! :)

  8. I feel the same way when I hear of oil price hikes, the peso 'alarm' sign in my head lights up like crazy, telling me how this would adversely affect our budget. :( But we do have our ways of coping with the hikes, I'm just not sure if it's all enough to make up for the never-ending increase.

I work from home, and hubby works in Taguig. Eventhough we have our own car, he opts to do the daily commute instead. We live in Bacoor Cavite, and since he'll just be travelling alone anyway, the 250 pesos worth of gas allowance he'll need for the car will be too much compared to the 100 pesos he'll spend for commuting.

We also learned that ensuring the tank is full or at least not lower than half-full is more cost-effective than gassing up only when the tank's almost empty. :) Oh and yes, gas up as much as you can afford when prices roll back 'cause chances are great, that there will be a price hike in a couple of days. Sad, but true. :(

  9. for some people, there's really a need for a vehicle. but for some, esp the rich, it's more of a luxury. good decision to use one car lang kayo sis joy and the other one kapag may coding. you have to use it din naman kasi baka masira makina

  10. It aggravates me hearing about oil price hikes, etc.  It doesn't make sense why they always do that though the world market is not increasing the price?  Geez!
In my situation, I drive only when there is a need.  Usually, I go to the grocery store on weekends only.  And running errands is on a Monday so I won't waste gasoline.

  11. I prefer commuting than having my own car.  Yes driving in your own car is more convenient and comfortable but with all the expenses when travelling (gas, toll fee, maintenance etc) I think I can't handle it.  Kudos to you for deciding to use just one car :)

  16. i hope the government will keep their eyes open, price hike on a weekly basis, commodities as well but salaries are not increasing :(, it was only on surveys that economics is good, they should roam around and see for themselves that many are hungry and suffering from poverty :(

  17. oil prices increases upon surplus of demands, but its good that in the US a bakken oil shale is already being utilized, i hope the Philippines can also discover oil coming from shales too

  23. that is one of the many reasons why hubby does not want to buy a car fot the family, he still prefers to use the motorcycle since it consumes less gasoline than the car. visiting from FWAB mommy Joy.
